Finger Paint

As part of my resolution to create more, and do more with Atticus I decided to make my own finger paint. I found the recipe on Pintrest and I had everything to make it already in my house. I think I was more excited about the paint than Atticus was.

Here is the recipe:

After making it, I think I could have done without the dish soap, but I am a follow the recipe kind of gal.

  1. Mix together sugar and cornstarch in a small pan, then slowly add cold water.
  2. Cook over low heat, stirring until the mixture becomes a smooth; almost clear gel about 5 minutes.
  3. When it's cool, stir in clear dishwashing liquid.
  4. Scoop equal amounts of the mixture into containers and stir in food coloring or, for even more vibrant colors, use food-coloring paste.

I thought it would never get clear, but it did.

The hardest part was waiting for it to cool enough.

    Ready to create

I like the way the colors turned out.

A few things I learned in this process. One, it takes a little longer than 5 minutes for it to turn to gel. Another is that I could have used more food coloring. The recipe didn't say how much to add, and I was afraid of stained fingers, so I didn't use too much. When the paint was on the paper it was pretty faint. Also, I wish I had baby food jars or small shallow jelly jars to store the paint. Atticus was only interested in painting for a few minutes and then what to do with it all. All in all it was a fun little project that I would do again.
