I learn something new every day...

While leaving the zoo on Sunday, Jess, Marybeth, Lillianna and myself noticed a group of young women all dressed up like Little Bo-Peep. We figured it must be some type of performance or Tea Party or something. They had knee-hi stocking, corseted dresses, parasols, lots of lace and old school looking heels. Curiosity got the best of us, and Lillianna asked. She approached these Holly Hobby ladies and was told that they were "Gothic Lolita's" According to these gals, "Gothic Lolita's" are a Japanese subculture of young people who dress up in these elaborate outfits, just because. I had to know more.
Google supplied me with answers and many examples. Apparently there are several types of Lolita's. You can be a Sweet Lolita, Gothic, Punk, or Classic. What I have also learned is that Lolita doesn't have the same connotations in Japan as is does here in the US. It means childlike and cute.
So, if you happen to be out and about and see some young people parading around like Victorian Dolls, you won't have to ask.

Awesome, G. Thanks for the explanation and photos. I think I like the gothic lolitas the best. A little darkness isn't a bad thing.

Yikes! Think of all the great scrap pages you could have if you were into that kind of thing!

S-
I don't know where American girls find this stuff, but in Japan it's pretty popular and they have all kinds of stores devoted to it. The gist of the Lolita thing in Japan it means more like Childlike and Cute, as opposed to young slut.
